Gluten Free Vegan Corn Dogs!

Updated: Feb 2, 2021

Like the real deal, except they're totally allergen free! These corn dogs are absolutely delicious! They're a fun, simple, and a much healthier option than those heavily processed corn dogs from fast food vendors or the store. Whether its real meat or a vegan alternative is up to you!

Yields: ~3 full sized corn dogs, 12 mini

Difficulty: Easy

Quick Notes:

  • To save oil, make mini corn dogs instead, as these only take a couple inches of oil to fry!

  • To ensure that the batter will stick to each hot dog/veggie dog, pat each one dry before dipping them in batter.

  • When you're ready to fry your corn dogs, make sure you have everything you'll need in reach. You won't want to leave your oil unattended.

  • The consistency of your batter will depend on the kind of corn flour/masa you use. If it is too thick to dip each hot dog into, add more milk a little bit at a time (we're talking in teaspoons). Too thin of a batter will coat each corn dog very thinly. If it appears too thin, add more corn flour.

Ingredients:

Batter:

  • 3 regular sized hot dogs/veggie dogs

  • 1/4 cup masa (corn flour, not meal)

  • 1 tbsp gluten free Measure for Measure/all purpose flour

  • 1 tsp ground flax with 3 tsps warm water

  • 1/8 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tbsp canola/veg oil + more for frying

  • 1/4 cup plant milk

  • 1/2 tsp sugar

  • 1/8 tsp salt

Tools:

  • A tall/wide enough pot for frying the length of each corn dog

  • Tongs for removing each corn dog from the oil

  • A tall narrow jar for coating each hot dog in the batter

  • Skewers

  • A food thermometer

Method:

  1. In a small bowl, combine your dry ingredients

  2. Stir in the wet ingredients

  3. Pour the batter into a narrow and tall jar (that is at least the height of one hot dog).

  4. Remove 3 hot dogs from their packaging and pat each of them dry. This will help the batter stick. Skewer each one about 3/4 the way.

  5. Heat enough oil in your pot to submerge each corn dog. Heat it to 360 degrees Fahrenheit.

  6. When your oil is about ready, dip a skewered hot dog into the batter to fully coat it. Once your oil is at the desired temperature, submerge the corn dog in the oil and let fry for ~2 minutes, or until golden brown.

  7. Repeat with the remaining hot dogs/batter and enjoy!
